September 14th, 2006

At the Wii event in Japan which took place today, Nintendo disclosed what items will be coming with the Wii console:

  • 1 Nintendo Wii
  • 1 Nintendo Wii Controller Strap
  • 1 Nintendo Wii Nunchuck and Remote
  • 1 AC adapter
  • 1 AV cable (Non-Component Cable)
  • 1 Wii Stand
  • 1 Wii Auxiliary Plate
  • 1 Sensor Bar
  • 1 Plug Server Stand
  • 3 AA Batteries
Well, looks like I’ll be nabbing a few extra controllers right away… Darn you Nintendo! Oh, alright… I suppose it is considered the lesser of three evils.

WoW Boardgame Expansion Update

September 8th, 2006

I just called Fantasy Flight Games to see if they had any further information on when the game will be released other than “Coming in September.”

They unfortunately did.

Looks like it will realisticly be arriving in stores and homes around the third week of October.  That was a sad thing to hear, considering how long we’ve been waiting for it thus far.  I almost would have prefered that they not announce this until a month away, just releasing press news about it instead of an entire product preview page.  Looks like we had best settle in I suppose.  At least we have the expansion’s manual available for reading already!

Life and Death Semantics

August 31st, 2006

Have you ever noticed that where life and death are concerned, a thing might give life whereas something else might bring death. You don’t often see a thing “giving death” or “bringing life,” save for a doctor bringing life into the world.

Sorry? Oh, you were looking for a point to my rambling? I don’t mean to let you down, but you won’t find one here today.

PS3: Losing Steam or Gaining Customers?

August 29th, 2006

The next supposed “leader” of the up-coming (and partially already here *looks at Xbox 360) generation of gaming consoles, Sony’s PS3, has had a rough couple of days. Yesterday, an article on The Inquirer claimed that the graphics processor (RSX or ‘Reality Synthesizer’) was downgraded to be 10% of it’s original processing power.

This news seems to produce a few emotions in a very specific order when heard: First, “dang, that sucks, it’s not going to be as good now,” followed by either “ya know, it actually won’t affect me since I’m not buying one anyway, so nevermind.” Or if you are buying one “hmm, actually, this means it will cost me less money, so that’s cool.” I know I went through this, followed by “maybe after I buy my Wii, I’ll be able to get a PS3 a year or two after release when it’s gone down a tad (”a tad” equaling around $250-300) in price.”

After the news that Red Steel is upgrading their control schema to include real motion sword fighting, my entire Wii-life flashed before my eyes as dollar after dollar was passed to various stores in exchange for that oh so sweet Wii fix. Late nights of caffine and barely waking up in time for work the next day. Oh yeah, re-living my early 20’s… Thank you Nintendo for ruining my life!!

The worst part? Even after realizing all of that, I’m still getting a Wii. ;p

Red Steel Gets True Freehand Swordplay

August 28th, 2006

The only complaint I have had about this game was just killed, put in a plastic bag and drug into a dense forest to be buried.

“The developer has confirmed that the control scheme will be completely redesigned so the controller moves are converted into the game precisely. Besides the controller sensitivity will be completely adjustable in the final version. And the graphics were improved very well since E3, now the atmosphere is darker and thrilling.”

9 1/2 Weeks Old

August 28th, 2006

I know that this is the first time I’ve mentioned this here.  It’s only due to the fact that I wanted to tell as many people as I could before they found out on my blog!  Nevertheless, it is true, my wife is pregnanat, around 9 1/2 weeks so far as we have been told.  Wendy sent me this beautiful picture of a baby at this very age.

9weeks.jpg

“The baby is about 1 1/4 inches long from head to buttocks, heartbeat detectable by ultrasound. Between the ninth and tenth weeks the baby swallows and squints. If the child’s forehead is touched, he may turn his head away and pucker up and frown. By now the child can bend the wrist and elbow independently and has the full use of his arms. By this time the entire body is sensitive to touch and is also capable of spontaneous movement. (Thumb sucking has been observed by the eleventh week, and x-rays will disclose clear details of the skeleton.)”

Feel free to visit my Flickr account on the right to see the ultrasound images of our little one.  Thank you, God for this gift.

Stardust@Home Update

August 14th, 2006

Since the website was not allowing logins even a few days after it’s gate’s were supposedly open, I had not checked back until today.  w00t!  They’re finally able to let us in.  I, of all people as a web developer, should understand the inescapable detrament of an insufficient web server, incapable of the load that is being thrown at it.

Nevertheless, I have been playing with the VM (Virtual Microscope) for the past 30 minutes or so and it’s actually a lot of fun.  I feel like I’m actually helping the project.

Two Tracks (Stardust) Five Tracks (Stardust)

In the mere 30 minutes that I’ve been analyzing these movies (the slides), I’ve gone through 37.  Of these 37, 12 were Calibration Movies.  It’s not that difficult, turns out.  I have an accuracy score of 100% so far.  More to come, I’m sure…

Firefox Runs for Prom Queen

August 14th, 2006

This is awesome. I just wish the rest of the world would have such enthusiasm about web standards!

“A group of high school kids campaign to have Firefox (yes, the web browser) run for prom queen at their school. The advertising is incredible, and they’re almost successful–until the school bans browser candidates.”

Stardust@Home

August 1st, 2006

The Stardust@Home project is less than a half hour away from opening their doors for the initial tutorial (available now), testing (which is not currently available) and finally, registration!

Per an e-mail I just received:

“We announce the launch of the Stardust@home project.  Data will be available starting at 11 am Pacific Daylight Time (1800 GMT),
Tuesday, August 1, 2006.”

And a little information on how it works:

“When a hypervelocity particle enters the top surface of an aerogel collector, it makes a track many times its own size as it slows and stops in the aerogel.

The particles themselves are too small to see. You will be using a Virtual Microscope (VM) to look for the tracks made by the particles rather than the particles themselves. The tracks are just below the surface of the aerogel.”

So, if I were to give a suggestion about this to you, it would be this: “Check it out now, funk soul brother.” I’d at least suggest reading the About page!! In fact, the site just became unavailable as I am writing this… It’s starting… it’s all starting!!

World of Warcraft Boardgame Expansion

July 25th, 2006

Finally, Fantasy Flight Games is releasing an expansion to the already fantastic boardgame, World of Warcraft called Shadow of War. The best part, aside from the impressive improvements? It’s only $25! It should be available sometime in September.

World of Warcraft: Shadow of War

Having played the game as often as I have, I have noticed a few holes in the game. Things that draw your attention to the fact that you’re playing a board game instead of toward the idea that you’re controlling the fate of a character who is constantly striving to improve on his abilities. This expansion seems to be geared toward closing some of those holes.
