World of Warcraft Boardgame Expansion

Finally, Fantasy Flight Games is releasing an expansion to the already fantastic boardgame, World of Warcraft called Shadow of War. The best part, aside from the impressive improvements? It’s only $25! It should be available sometime in September.

World of Warcraft: Shadow of War

Having played the game as often as I have, I have noticed a few holes in the game. Things that draw your attention to the fact that you’re playing a board game instead of toward the idea that you’re controlling the fate of a character who is constantly striving to improve on his abilities. This expansion seems to be geared toward closing some of those holes.

One obvious example of this is the presence of and the player’s interaction with blue creatures. A player is rewarded for defeating green and red creatures but not blue creatures. These have felt like nothing more than road blocks so far. A thing that exists only to slow down one’s progress. A game is not fun if an element exists soley to hinder one’s hard earned advancement.

The expansion addresses the problems associated with these pesky creatures in a number of ways. Firstly, a new quest deck is added to the table.

“One of the most anticipated features is the new blue Quest deck. These cards reward players for defeating independent creatures and can be used by either faction. Remember the Hunter’s Track Beasts card mentioned earlier? This power is even more useful, since you may be able to place independent creatures directly on your character to quickly complete the blue quest.”

Each class is getting new abilities and abilities, each item deck more items and an entirely new item deck is being added which seems to be a deck of supplimental items extending the abilities of the already existing items.

All of the Item decks receive a stack of new cards, including Special Item cards. A new type of item is also introduced in this expansion. Bonus Item cards are gained primarily by completing the new blue quests, but players may also receive them as rewards for resolving Destiny cards.
